First Home of F-35 in ANG Announced

The first US Air Force Air National Guard unit to fly the new F-35 Lightening II will be the 158th Fighter Wing of the Vermont Air National Guard based at the Burlington Air Guard Station.

The announcement was first made by the Burlington Free Press, based on an email sent by the project manager for F-35 basing studies in late September. It is expected to be confirmed by an environmental impact report released in early October.

The 158th currently flies the F-16 Falcon, which are nearing the end of their useful service lives and without the F-35 the VANG would be unable to fulfill their role in our nation's air defenses.

Some local residents have been opposed to the allocation of the F-35, claiming that the increased noise may render more houses near the base unsuitable for residential living and mentioning the possible environmental and safety risks to the surrounding area if an F-35 crashes.
