National Guard Assists With Marathon Security

Over 800 National Guard members from Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island were at the Boston Marathon this year - but they weren't running the race, they were helping the race go smoothly.

The National Guard provided chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and improvised explosive detection teams in order to ensure the security of the runners and spectators, as well as medical teams and security personnel to help keep the route through the 8 cities and towns clear.

Things weren't entirely business as usual, though. Due to the bombings at last year's Boston Marathon, all the security members and support team members were armed and alert.

All the planning was worth it - not only did the marathon go off without a hitch, but that's despite an increase in the number of registered runners - up to 36,000 from last year's 27,000.
